Das Projekt "Indefinite in Diskurs / Special Indefinites in Discourse" wird von der DFG gefördert.

 

Zusammenfassung

Indefinite Nominalphrasen lassen sich auf unterschiedlichen semantischen und pragmatischen Ebenen beschreiben: (i) Sie tragen mit einer existentielle Aussage zu den Wahrheitswertbedingungen eines Satzes bei. (ii) Sie führen Diskursreferenten ein und dienen damit als Antezedenten für anaphorische Ausdrücke im folgenden Text oder Diskurs. (iii) Sie statten diese Diskursreferenten mit einem Diskurs strukturierenden Potential oder DSP aus, d.h. sie verbinden mit dem Diskursreferenten Informationen über die referenzielle Struktur des kommenden Diskurses wie z.B., dass der Diskursreferent sich als Topic eignet oder aber häufig anaphorisch aufgegriffen werden wird. Die Ziele des Projekts umfassen besonders die folgenden beiden Punkte: Zum einen sollen die drei oben genannten Eigenschaften von indefiniten NPs aus empirischer und theoretischer Sicht untersucht werden. Zum zweiten sollen bestehende semantische Theorien so erweitert werden, dass das Diskurspotential (DSP) in eine theoretische Beschreibung integriert werden kann.

Ausgangpunkt des Projektes ist die Arbeit von Enç (1991) über indefinite direkte Objekte im Türkischen, in der Enç nachweist, dass Akkusativ markierte direkte Objekte spezifisch sind. Sie leitet nun Spezifizität von Partitivität und damit Diskursabhängigkeit (d-linking) ab. In dem Projekt werden wir einen Schritt weiter gehen und eine Theorie entwickeln, in der wir nicht nur die Diskursabhängigkeit indefiniter NPs modellieren, sondern auch das diskursstrukturierendes Potential beschreiben. Diese neue Theorie werden wir zunächst an den indefiniten direkten Objekten im Türkischen entwickeln und dazu die in der Literatur vorhandenen Daten erweitern und nach einer Systematik annotieren, so dass wir die relevanten referenziellen Parameter kontrollieren können. Die Korpusarbeit soll durch weitere Experimente komplementiert werden (story continuation, comprehension and eye tracking experiments), so dass ein vollständiges Bild von dem Phänomen erfasst und die neu entwickelte Theorie getestet werden kann.

Abstract

Indefinite noun phrases (or short indefinites) contribute to different semantic and pragmatic levels: (i) they make an existential contribution to the truth condition of a sentence, (ii) they introduce discourse referents as potential antecedents for subsequent anaphoric terms, and, as the present project aims to show, (iii) they furnish discourse referents with a Discourse Structuring Potential, i.e. they give information about the referential structure of the upcoming discourse, e.g. at what point in the discourse and how the entity associated with the discourse referent is going to be re-mentioned. The goals of this project are twofold. First, we intend to investigate the three aforementioned semantic-pragmatic levels from an empirical and theoretical point of view. Second, we will extend existing semantic theories through an account of the Discourse Structuring Potential, i.e. by a theory that models the forward looking discourse properties of indefinites.

Ençs (1991) paper on indefinite direct objects in Turkish is a first step towards a semantics of indefinites that relates specificity to discourse-linking. In the present approach we will take a step further and develop a theory that not only analyses the backward looking discourse properties, but also extends to forward looking discourse properties. This new semantic theory will have as a starting point a thorough investigation of indefinite direct objects in Turkish, which alternate between a case-marked and an unmarked form. The project will expand the data that has been discussed in the literature so far by means of a corpus search and annotation of relevant referential parameters and using data from story continuation, comprehension and eye tracking experiments.
